Safety Guidelines for a Fun and Safe Canoeing Experience

Learn essential safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure with Y Bridge Canoe & Outfitter.

Pre-Trip Preparations

Before embarking on your canoeing adventure, it is crucial to prepare adequately. Ensure that you have all the necessary safety equipment, including life jackets, first-aid kits, and waterproof bags for valuables. Wear appropriate clothing for the weather conditions, and secure any loose items that could potentially fall into the water. Additionally, inform someone on shore of your planned route and expected return time. This way, if any unforeseen circumstances occur, help can be dispatched promptly.

On-the-Water Safety

While on the water, always wear your life jacket, regardless of your swimming ability. Keep a safe distance from other watercraft and be mindful of your surroundings, including potential hazards like rocks, strong currents, and other obstacles. Communicate with your group consistently and use hand signals or whistles to alert each other of any dangers. Follow the guidance of your tour guide if you are on a guided tour, as they are trained to navigate the waters safely and efficiently.

Emergency Procedures

In the event of an emergency, remain calm and assess the situation. Please we ask if the boat turns over save yourself first. We believe that our equipment is replaceable, our customers are not. If someone falls overboard, ensure they are wearing a life jacket and help them back into the canoe if it is safe to do so. Familiarize yourself with basic first-aid procedures and know the location of the nearest medical facility in case of severe injuries.

New this year our Stone County officers have their own boat and patrol the waters in case of any emergency.
